How this generator works

The generator computes the holidays for whatever year you pick. Five of the eleven federal holidays fall on fixed dates, and six follow a weekday rule: Thanksgiving is the fourth Thursday in November, Memorial Day the last Monday in May, Presidents' Day the third Monday in February. It follows their history too. Juneteenth became a federal holiday in 2021 and Martin Luther King Jr. Day in 1986, so a sheet for an earlier year leaves them off. The working list under the sheet names every marked day in full, with its kind: federal holiday, observed date, observance or one of your own.

Then it applies the observed-date rule in 5 U.S.C. 6103(b): a Saturday holiday moves to the Friday before and a Sunday holiday to the Monday after, so the date on the calendar and the day you are off are often different days. The sheet marks both, labels the moved one "obs.", and counts the shifts in the readout so you can see at a glance whether the month you are printing has any. The shift can even land in the previous year, because a Saturday New Year's Day is observed on the last day of December, so the generator checks the neighbouring years' holidays for every month it draws.

Choose US Letter or A4, portrait or landscape orientation, and a margin from 5 to 25 mm (12.7 mm by default), then leave the print dialog's scale at 100% so the sheet prints at its true size. To add observances such as Easter and Mother's Day, set Mark to "Federal holidays and observances"; the working list keeps them apart from the federal set, because they are not days off work. Holiday names print only when the cells are tall enough to hold them without running into the next row, so a full-year sheet marks holidays by bolding the numeral instead, since numerals set at 3.1 mm leave no room for a name. A long name on a month sheet wraps to two lines inside its cell; if it still does not fit, the printed label ends in an ellipsis and the working list keeps the full name.

Nothing is marked for years before 1978, because the modern list is not what the country observed then. There is no country picker; type other holidays into the box as your own dates.

Frequently asked questions

Which holidays does this mark?
The eleven US federal holidays, computed from the rules in 5 U.S.C. 6103, so Thanksgiving lands on the fourth Thursday of November for any year you pick. It can also mark fifteen widely planned observances such as Easter, Mother's Day, Halloween and the daylight-saving changeovers. The working list labels each of those as an observance that is not a day off and keeps them apart from the federal set, because nobody gets Valentine's Day off.
Why does one holiday sometimes get two marked days?
Because the date and the day off are not always the same day. Under 5 U.S.C. 6103(b) a federal holiday falling on a Saturday is observed the Friday before, and one falling on a Sunday is observed the Monday after. Independence Day 2026 is a Saturday, so the 4th is the holiday and Friday the 3rd is the day federal offices close. The sheet marks both and labels the second one "obs.". To print only the holidays themselves, untick "Mark observed dates"; the readout still counts the shifts.
Can it mark a day in a different month or year than the holiday?
Yes. When New Year's Day falls on a Saturday, the observed closure is 31 December of the previous year, and that December's sheet marks it: December 2027 shows the 31st as the observed New Year's Day for 2028. Christmas 2027 is also a Saturday, so the same sheet marks the 24th as its observed date, and the readout counts 2 observed shifts for that month.
Can I add my own dates, or holidays for another country?
You can add your own: type one per line as a date and a label, like "3/15 Payday", and they are marked alongside the computed ones. The date can also be written 3-15 or 3.15, and two marks on the same day share the cell. A line the page cannot read is listed under the sheet as not understood, and a date outside the month on screen is named so you can switch to it. There is no country picker. Holiday sets differ by country, state, school district and employer, and many of them move, so a built-in list for thirty countries would be wrong somewhere every year. Type another country's holidays in as your own dates.
Which years does it cover, and is anything uploaded?
Federal holidays are marked from 1978 onward. For an earlier year the sheet marks nothing and a note under it explains why, and holidays created later appear only from their first year: Martin Luther King Jr. Day from 1986 and Juneteenth from 2021. Nothing is uploaded: the sheet is generated as vector geometry inside this page, printed through your browser's own dialog, and exists only on your device. There is no account, no watermark and no stored setting.
