How this generator works

The sheet you see is an SVG drawn in physical units: every dot center is a real millimeter coordinate, not a screen pixel. The page computes how many whole cells fit inside the printable area — the sheet minus your margin — then places a dot at every intersection of that lattice and centers the whole pattern, so the spacing never breaks into partial cells at the edges. The readout shows the resulting geometry: sheet size, true spacing in both units, the exact cell count, and the dot size.

Printing is where most dot-grid sites quietly fail, because "Fit to page" rescales their fixed PDFs and 5 mm dots arrive 4.7 mm apart. This page sets the print size to match your chosen sheet exactly and keeps the lattice inside a 12.7 mm default margin — within the mechanical dead zone of essentially every consumer printer — so nothing needs rescaling. Leave the dialog at 100% or "Actual size" and the millimeters on paper match the millimeters on the readout; the methodology page shows how to verify with a ruler.

The honest limits: if your print dialog is set to fit, shrink, or scale, no generator can save the spacing — check that setting once and it stays checked. Dots below about 0.3 mm can print faintly or unevenly on consumer printers, which is why the default here is 0.4 mm rather than the smallest the control allows. And borderless edge-to-edge dot grids depend on printer hardware this page can't control, so the margin control stops at 5 mm instead of pretending zero works everywhere.

Frequently asked questions

Will the dots really sit 5 mm apart when printed?
Yes, provided the print dialog's scale is set to 100% — sometimes labeled "Actual size" — and not "Fit to page", which silently shrinks the sheet to clear printer margins. Every dot's position is computed in true millimeter units, the whole lattice stays inside a safe margin so nothing gets clipped, and laying a ruler across the first printout will confirm the spacing.
Why is 5 mm the bullet-journal standard?
Because the dotted notebooks that defined bullet journaling space their dots 5 mm apart, so layouts, trackers, and headers designed for those pages transfer to this one unchanged. It is a comfortable module for average handwriting; if yours runs small, drop the spacing to 4 mm and you gain rows without the page feeling crowded.
When are dots better than grid lines?
When the structure should guide and then disappear: dots anchor lettering, habit trackers, and page layouts while receding behind ink, so the finished spread reads as your work rather than the paper.
