How this generator works
Each shape is stored as a closed outline — a list of corner coordinates in a square design box, written as geometry in this page's own source. When you set a dot count, the page measures the total length of that outline and then walks it at a constant step, dropping a dot at every stop. That is what makes one shape work at 12 dots and at 60 without anyone redrawing it: the dots are placed by distance travelled around the edge, not by picking some of the corners, so they come out evenly spaced whatever number you ask for.
Even spacing alone is not quite enough, and the exception is the interesting part. A star has ten sharp points, and a dot placed two millimetres past one of them leaves the point itself unmarked — so the child joins the dots faithfully and draws a rounded blob. Any vertex that turns by more than about 38 degrees therefore pulls the nearest dot onto itself. The dot count is unchanged and no corner takes a dot another corner has already claimed; what changes is that the gaps either side of a pinned corner go slightly uneven. The readout reports how many dots moved, because a sheet whose spacing looks irregular should say why rather than leave you wondering whether it is a bug.
The limits are worth stating. Skip counting multiplies the labels and nothing else, so a 24-dot sheet counting by 10s ends at 240 — check that the last number is one your child will actually meet, because the sheet will happily print it. Ask for fewer dots than the shape has corners and some corners cannot get one; the page warns and names the number you would need. The shapes are single closed loops by construction, since a dot-to-dot is one continuous path — anything needing a second stroke, like the hole in a mug handle, belongs on a colouring sheet instead. And the usual print caution applies: leave the dialog at 100% or "Actual size" rather than "Fit to page", or the millimetres in the readout are not the millimetres on your desk. Frequently asked questions
How many dots should a connect-the-dots sheet have?
It depends on what the child is practising rather than on their age. For a preschooler learning the shape of the numerals, 10 to 15 dots is plenty and the picture stays obvious throughout. For counting practice at reception or kindergarten level, 20 to 30 works well. Above about 40 the arithmetic stops being the point and the drawing takes over, which is its own worthwhile activity. The dial here runs from 8 to 80, and the shape is resampled at whatever number you pick rather than dots being added to a fixed drawing.
What is skip counting and why is it on this sheet?
Skip counting is counting in steps larger than one — 2, 4, 6, 8 or 5, 10, 15, 20 — and it is how multiplication is usually introduced before multiplication is named. Set the step and the dots are labelled in that sequence instead of 1, 2, 3. The picture is identical either way: the step multiplies the labels and never the number of dots, so the same shape can be reused across a year of increasing difficulty without the child recognising it as the same worksheet.
Are the pictures traced from clip art?
No. Every shape on this page is written as geometry in the page's own source — lists of coordinates and sampled arcs — and drawn from those numbers. Nothing was traced, no artwork was imported, and no font file is involved. That is a deliberate rule for all the printable art on this site, and it is also why the shapes are simple: a dot-to-dot is a picture you can rebuild from about thirty points, so detail beyond that would make the sheet worse rather than better.
Why are some dots closer together than others?
Because the corners are pinned. Spacing the dots evenly around the outline is the right default, but even spacing will happily drop a dot just past the point of a star and leave the point itself unmarked — so the child joins the dots and draws a rounded blob. Any sharp corner therefore pulls the nearest dot onto itself. The number of dots does not change, the spacing on either side of that corner goes slightly uneven, and the shape keeps its points. The readout tells you how many dots were moved.
Is there an answer key?
Yes, on the second page, and it is on by default. It prints the same sheet with the outline already joined, which is what you check against rather than a description of the shape. Turn it off with the checkbox if you are printing a class set and do not want thirty answer keys, and the sheet count in the readout strip updates to match so you know what is about to come out of the printer.
