Ruled Paper Sizes: College, Wide, and Metric
"College ruled" is not a vibe — it is 9/32 of an inch, and the paper industry has been holding that number for a very long time. This guide gives the three US rules in exact millimeters, explains what the 3-line handwriting rule is doing, and covers the other measurement that quietly matters: whether your sheet is A4 or US Letter.
Those are the real stationery standards — 9/32, 11/32, and 1/4 of an inch — and they are what the presets load. Print one at 100% and a ruler will confirm the spacing.
The three US rules, exactly
American ruled paper comes in three standard line spacings, all defined in thirty-seconds of an inch. Converted to millimeters and rounded to two decimals:
College rule — 9/32 in, 7.14 mm. The default for high school and university work, and what most loose-leaf and composition notebooks in the US actually are. It is the compromise line height: tight enough that a page holds a real amount of writing, open enough that ordinary handwriting doesn't collide with the line above.
Wide rule — 11/32 in, 8.73 mm. Sometimes sold as legal rule. About 22% taller than college, which is the difference between "my handwriting fits" and "my handwriting fights the page" for younger writers and anyone with large, round letterforms.
Narrow rule — 1/4 in, 6.35 mm. The densest of the three, and the only one whose millimeter value is exact rather than rounded, because a quarter inch is precisely 6.35 mm. It fits the most lines per sheet, which makes it the choice for dense note-taking and small handwriting — and a poor choice for anyone whose ascenders and descenders are generous.
The rounding matters less than it looks. College rule's true conversion is 7.14375 mm and wide rule's is 8.73125 mm; at two decimals the error is well under a hundredth of a millimeter per line, far below what any printer or ruler can resolve.
The 3-line handwriting rule
Handwriting practice paper is a different structure, not just a wider version of the same thing. Instead of one line repeating, it draws groups of three: a solid top line, a dashed midline, and a solid baseline, with a gap between groups so each line of writing sits in its own band.
The dashed midline is the entire teaching mechanism. Lowercase letters without ascenders — a, c, e, m, n, o — are meant to fill the space between the baseline and the midline. Capitals, and the ascenders on letters like b, d, h, k, and l, reach up to the top line. Descenders on g, j, p, q, and y drop below the baseline into the gap. A learner who is hitting those references is producing letters at consistent relative heights, which is most of what makes handwriting legible before it ever becomes elegant.
The midline is dashed rather than solid on purpose: it is a guide to aim at, not a line to write on, and making it visually weaker than the baseline keeps the baseline as the dominant reference. On the lined paper generator the handwriting preset builds these groups and separates them by half the rule height, then fits as many whole groups as the printable area holds — no half groups sliced off at the bottom edge.
A4 and US Letter are not the same sheet
The other measurement that decides whether a printout works is the paper itself. A4 is 210 × 297 mm. US Letter is 215.9 × 279.4 mm — that is 8.5 × 11 inches expressed exactly. So Letter is 5.9 mm wider and 17.6 mm shorter than A4: a rectangle of different proportions, not a rounding difference.
That mismatch is the single most common cause of wrongly-scaled printables. A ruled PDF laid out for A4 is 17.6 mm too tall for a Letter tray, so a fit-to-page dialog shrinks it by the height ratio — 279.4 ÷ 297, about 94% — and a college rule arrives at roughly 6.7 mm instead of 7.14. Going the other way, a Letter sheet on A4 is 5.9 mm too wide and gets scaled to about 97%, which is a smaller error and therefore an even more convincing one.
Neither direction announces itself. The lines still look like lines. This is why the sheets here are generated to the paper size you pick rather than exported once and hoped for, and why the one setting worth checking in your print dialog is scale — the actual-size guide covers where that control hides in each browser.
Metric ruled paper, honestly
Outside the US, lined paper is specified in millimeters and printed on A-series sheets, and there is no single international line spacing the way there is a single college rule. Exercise books vary by country, by publisher, and by school stage, so the honest answer to "what is the metric equivalent of college rule?" is that there isn't one canonical figure to quote — which is exactly why a generator with a millimeter field beats a fixed template. If your school or notebook specifies a spacing, type it; if you are matching an existing page, measure ten lines on it and divide by ten, the same trick that makes ruler verification reliable.
What the metric side does give you is a clean way to think about density. Taking a Letter sheet with the default 12.7 mm margins, the writable height is 254 mm, which works out to roughly 35 college lines, about 29 wide-rule lines, or about 40 narrow-rule lines. Those counts are arithmetic, not a promise — the exact number depends on your margin — but the ratios are stable and they are the real trade-off between the three rules.
Choosing a rule for your handwriting
Match the rule to the vertical size of your letters, not to your age or your school year. The practical test: write a line of ordinary text on unruled paper, then measure the height of a lowercase letter with no ascender or descender — an o or an e. That height wants to be roughly half the line spacing, leaving room for ascenders above and descenders below without either colliding with the neighboring line.
By that measure, letters around 3–3.5 mm sit comfortably on college rule, letters closer to 4 mm want wide rule, and consistently small writing near 3 mm gains a substantial number of lines per page on narrow rule. Beginners get wide rule for a reason that has nothing to do with taste: forming letters is a motor-control problem before it is a style problem, and a taller band forgives more error while the movements are still being learned.
One more variable worth setting deliberately is the left margin line — the vertical rule that traditional US stationery places 31.75 mm (1.25 in) from the edge. It is optional on the generator, and it is genuinely useful when a page will be filed in a binder or annotated in the margin, and genuinely wasted space when it won't be.
