How this generator works

The sheet is an SVG drawn in physical units: every coordinate is a real millimeter, not a screen pixel. The control sets the one measurement that defines manuscript paper — the gap between staff lines — and everything else follows from it: five lines make a staff four gaps tall, and consecutive staves are separated by four more gaps of blank space, which leaves room for ledger lines, stems, and lyrics without the staves reading as one block. Only whole staves are drawn, and the block is centered vertically so the top and bottom margins match; the readout reports the gap in millimeters and inches alongside the number of staves that fit, so you know the layout before you spend the paper.

Choosing the size is the whole decision. Published sheet music sits near a 7 mm staff, which is the 1.75 mm default here; teaching and beginner manuscript runs much larger, because a pencil notehead that fits a 7 mm staff is a chore for a nine-year-old; and dense sketching or condensed-score work goes smaller. Printing is where most printable-paper sites quietly fail, because "Fit to page" rescales their fixed PDFs and a 7 mm staff arrives at 6.6 mm. This page sets the print size to match your chosen sheet exactly and keeps the staves inside a 12.7 mm default margin, so nothing needs rescaling — leave the dialog at 100% or "Actual size" and the millimeters on paper match the readout. The honest limits: this is blank staff paper and nothing more. There are no clefs, key signatures, time signatures, barlines, braces, or brackets, and because the staves are evenly spaced, nothing on the page groups them into systems — for piano or ensemble writing you add those marks by hand. Very fine settings have a physical floor too: below roughly 1.2 mm the gaps stop holding a handwritten notehead, and line weights under about 0.2 mm render inconsistently on consumer printers, which is why the default weight is 0.3 mm. And if your print dialog is set to fit, shrink, or scale, no generator can save the measurements.

What staff size should I choose?
The control sets the gap between staff lines, and a staff is four gaps tall. The 1.75 mm default gives a 7 mm staff, close to the size most published sheet music uses — comfortable for adult handwriting with a fine pen. Beginners, young students, and anyone writing with a pencil are better served by 2.5 to 3.5 mm, a 10 to 14 mm staff with room for fat noteheads and fingering marks. Dense sketching, condensed scores, and reduction work go the other way, down toward 1.25 mm.
How many staves fit on a page?
As many whole staves as the printable area holds. Each staff is four line gaps tall, consecutive staves are separated by four more gaps of blank space, and the whole block is centered so the top and bottom margins match. At the 1.75 mm default that works out to 18 staves on US Letter portrait and 19 on A4 portrait; widening the line gap or the page margin gives you fewer, roomier staves. The readout counts them before you print, so you never find out on paper.
Does this include clefs, time signatures, or barlines?
No — this is genuinely blank manuscript paper, five ruled lines and nothing else. That is deliberate: the clef, key, meter, and barlines are the first decisions you make, and pre-printed ones are wrong for most of what people actually write, from a bass line to a drum grid to an exercise in an unusual meter. If you need staves that arrive with a treble clef already on them, this generator is not that tool.
Can I use it for piano or a multi-part score?
You can, with one caveat: the staves are spaced evenly, so nothing on the sheet groups them into systems. There are no braces, no brackets, and no extra gap between one system and the next — you draw those yourself, which takes a ruler and a moment's counting. For piano, choose a staff count that divides by two and bracket each pair as you go. For larger scores, a wider line gap gives you more room to write in the connecting marks.
Will it print at true size, and does anything leave my device?
The staff size is true as long as the print dialog's scale is 100% (sometimes labeled "Actual size") rather than "Fit to page", which quietly shrinks the sheet — set that once, then check the first printout with a ruler. For a PDF, press Print and choose "Save as PDF" as the destination: your browser generates the file itself. Nothing is uploaded, stored, or watermarked, because the sheet only ever exists inside this page and in your own print queue.
